The Psychology behind HiLoBuffalo
HiLoBuffalo is rooted in simple but powerful psychological principles that support emotional wellbeing, memory, and connection.
Each day, users are invited to share three things:
- High โ something that went well
- Low โ something that was hard
- Buffalo โ something surprising, weird, or delightful
This practice draws on evidence from positive psychology, cognitive science, and emotional regulation research.
โ๏ธ Encoding the Good
Naming a "high" each day helps us to strengthen long-term memory of our positive experiences. Our brains are wired to notice problems more than joys โ a bias that kept our ancestors alive, but can dampen daily wellbeing. By pausing to reflect on what went well, we increase our awareness of meaning, mastery, connection, and joy โ boosting life satisfaction over time.
๐ Acknowledging the Hard
Sharing a "low" isn't about complaining โ it's about normalizing the full range of human emotion. When we name the things we're struggling with, especially with people we trust, we reduce shame and increase connection. Research shows that expressing difficult emotions, especially when received empathically, can improve mental health and relational closeness.
Noticing the Unexpected
The "buffalo" โ the strange, funny, or surprising part of the day โ invites us to stay alert to the quirks and unpredictability of life. Surprise is one of the most memorable emotional states and plays a crucial role in curiosity, learning, and creativity. This prompt helps users stay attuned to the magic and delight of the unexpected.
HiLoBuffalo isn't just a journaling tool โ it's a ritual for staying connected to what matters. It teaches us to witness joy, share our burdens, embrace life's unexpected magical moments โ together.
